Giorgio Griffa was born in Turin in 1936. He is considered one of the main exponents of Analytical Painting. Giorgio Griffa’s can be considered a painting made up of signs stripped of meaning and “interrupted”, like essential traces that unfold on the canvas. The memory of painting that overlaps with the personal memory of the artist. His first personal exhibition was held at the Galleria Martano in Turin in 1968.

Among his most important exhibitions, the following are mentioned in particular: “Prospect 1969” at the Städtische Kunsthalle in Düsseldorf, and so on again in 1973 (Prospect 1973); “Visualized thought processes – Junge Italianische Avantgarde” at the Lucerne Museum in 1970; participation in the “Contemporanea” exhibition, held at Villa Borghese, in Rome in 1973; “Geplante Malerei”, held at the Westfalischer Kunstverein in Münster in 1974; the personal room at the XXXIX Venice Biennale in 1980 and participation in the “Informale in Italia” held at the GAM in Bologna in 1983; “Abstract”, in 1988 at Palazzo Forti in Verona and at the Palazzo della Permanente in Milan. In November 2001 and January 2002 the GAM of Turin dedicated two important exhibitions to him.

Among the most recent personal exhibitions, we must mention those at the MACRO in Rome in 2011, at the Mies Van der Rohe Haus in Berlin in 2012, at the Center Art Contemporain in Geneva in 2015, at the Kunsthalle in Bergen 2015, at the Fondation Vincent Van Gogh in Arles in 2016 and the one at the Center Pompidou in Paris which acquired some works for the permanent collection. In 2017 he was invited again to the LVII Venice Biennale. Griffa lives and works in Turin.
