Alberto Burri was born in Città di Castello in 1915 and studied medicine. He becomes a doctor but was imprisoned during the war in 1943. He is then transferred to a prison camp in Texas where he start painting. After coming back to Italy, he quit his job as a doctor and starts is artist’s career. He get the highlights of the art world with artworks like the “muffe”, “catrami” and “gobbi”. In the 50’s he create one of the most important works, “sacchi”.
With some important solo exhibitions in the States between 1953 and 1955 Alberto Burri will be recognized as one the most important artists in the world. Later he will produce the famous “combustioni” and “plastiche” created modifying with fire materials. He was also a great innovator in printmaking, sperimenting revolutionary tecniques.
Alberto Burri’s artworks are in the most important museums and collections in the world and he is together with Fontana one of the few top artists on the 900’. He passes away in Niece in february 1995.
