Giuseppe Santomaso was born in Venice in 1907. He is a self taught painter raised watching the artworks in the Bevilacqua LA Masa Foundation in Venice. The first step in the career of the artist in is 1937 when travelling to Paris and Amsterdam far way from the way of painting of Italy.
During the fourties he will take part in the art movement Nuova Secessione Artistica Italiana and in Fronte Nuovo delle Arti with other artists as Cassinari, Guttuso, Vedova, Leoncillo and others. The passage from abstract to informal is the next step for Santomaso and the first informal artworks are from 1956. In the later part of his career from 1977 on, he will star painting letters’ envelops on his canvases.
The printmaking activity has been an important part of Santomaso artistic carrer, many times he said that sometimes graphic was more important than painting and brought his painting technique improvements. He participated to ten editions of Venice Biennale more times with a dedicated room and participated three times to the Documenta in Kassel in ’55, ’59, ’64. Giuseppe Santomaso died in Venice on 23 may 1990.
