Mimmo Rotella was born in Catanzaro on 7 october 1918. In 1951 he had his first solo exhibition at Galleria Chiurazzi in Rome. In 1953 he creates his first “decollages”, composition realized with billboards taken from the city walls and laid on canvas. In 1958 he will realize more figurative decollages with images from the cinema and Marylin Monroe will become his favourite subject.

In 1961 he followed the invite of the famous art critic Pierre Restany to join the Nouveau Rèalisme movement and three years later he moved to Paris. He continues his research realizing the “Artypo” and in 1975 the “Plastiforme” series, wrapped billboards put into plexiglass case.

From the 80’s after he set up in Milan, he realizes the “Blank” series in which he covers the billboard with monochrome coloured paper. He exhibited at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and at the MoMA of New York in 1990 and later in 1994 at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

The artworks of Mimmo Rotella are in the most important collections and museums in the world and he is internationally recognized as one of the most influent artists of 900’. He died in Milano on the 8 of January 2006.
